The 72nd Hunger Games was the 72nd annual installment of the Hunger Games. It took place approximately 3 years before the beginning of the 75th Hunger Games, Arena 01.

Games Summary

The 72nd Hunger Games was known for being somewhat of a Cinderella story for its Victor. Initially, the general consensus was that the likely winner would be from a Career District. The odds-on favorites were the District 2 Tributes - the male being named Agrippa and the female being named Glaive - due to their Training scores. Both Careers scored 11s, the first recorded instance of both Tributes scoring a near-perfect high score in the same year.

However, the eventual winner, Jack Atlas, managed to survive despite being at a disadvantage in the environment due to his urban District upbringing, as well as his lower Training score. He revealed himself to be surprisingly strong from the beginning; notably, he killed a jaguar with his bare hands, then used its skin to conceal himself and lure several Tributes to their deaths. After he lost the skin to a crocodile that also injured him, Jack was forced to continue moving, as he came to be pursued by a Career alliance led by Agrippa.

In the end, it came down to a fight between Jack and Agrippa, which Jack came out of victorious. In all, the 72nd Hunger Games took place over a time period of 20 days.

The Arena

The 72nd Hunger Games took place in a hot, drought-plagued tropical rainforest. Water was scarce, and the streams dried up completely over the course of the Arena, causing widespread dehydration. Trees would catch fire, also due to the drought, which threatened to set the entire Arena ablaze. Dangerous wild animals were known to prowl through the bushes, and mosquitoes threatened the Tributes with infection and disease. Poisonous muttations were also introduced to endanger Tribute lives.

Once the competition dwindled down to the final Tributes, the Gamemakers created a deadly hurricane which caused flooding, broken trees and mudslides, including the one which buried all of the remaining Tributes underneath it. Only the last two Tributes managed to dig themselves out before suffocation set in, and the hurricane ended when a Victor emerged.

Trivia

  • Jack Atlas is the only known Tribute to have been conferred a title/nickname by President Snow - that being "King of Victors".
